Complementary and Alternative Veterinary Medicine Discussion List
This page will show you in detail how to use the archives
The first thing you need to do is to obtain a password, so go to the CAVM Archives page:
You will see a screen that looks like this:
Now click on the link for the current month, which in this case is August 2002. This will bring you to the following screen:
At this point if you already have a password, you would enter your e-mail address (the one where you get your list mail) and your password to log in. However, if this is the first time you have used the archives, you should click on "get a new LISTSERV password first." That will bring you to the following screen:
Now enter the e-mail address where you get your list mail, and then enter a password (twice). This password should be something other than the one you use to log on to the Internet. Keep it simple, so it is easy to remember. If you ever forget this password, you can get a new one by going through the same process again. Once you have entered your e-mail address and password, click on the "Register password" button. You will then see this screen:
This screen tells you your confirmation has been e-mailed to you. Wait a few minutes and then check your e-mail. You should get a message like this:
This e-mail message tells you how to confirm. In most cases, you will simply click on the link, but if your e-mail program will not allow you to do that, copy and paste the link into your browser address field. Clicking on the link or manually pasting the URL into the browser, will bring you to this screen:
This screen is your confirmation that your password has been registered. You can now log in to the archives.
From the archives page, you can make changes to your subscription, such as changing from individual messages to digest, and setting your subscription to temporarily stop receiving messages. When you log on to the main archive page, click on the link that says "Join or leave the list (or change settings)." See below:
When you click on that link, you will get this screen:
You will need to log on to make changes, so click on "login with your LISTSERV password" and you will get this screen:
Type in your e-mail address and password and click the "Login" button, and you will get this screen:
This screen shows the first part of the subscription options page. Note that you can change from "Regular" to "Digest" by clicking the button next to "Digest." As you scroll down, you will see the rest of the screen:
Here you can also stop your list mail temporarily by selecting NOMAIL (Mail delivery disabled temporarily). Once you have selected your options, click on the "Update options" button.
Now let's go back to the main log in screen to see what else we can do with the archives. Assuming you have received a password, at the main login screen click on the current month (August 2002 in this example) and enter your e-mail address and password. You will then get this screen:
Note the initial listing of messages for the month. The default listing is for an alphabetical listing of posts for the month. By clicking on the appropriate buttons across the top of the screen (when you move your cursor over the buttons, you will find out what they do), you can change to a chronological listing with the most recent post at the top, like this:
Now you see the messages posted for August 2002 listed in chronological order with the most recent message first. This is very useful if you are traveling and have access to the Internet. You can log on to the list archives and see what has been posted to the list. You can also respond to messages or send new messages from this Web interface.
You can also search the archives either by clicking on the search button on the tool bar above the list of messages or by starting from the home page for the list. This is what the main search screen looks like:
So let's try a sample search:
Here I have typed in the words "raisin and grape" based on a recent post to the list. After I scroll down the page, I click on the "Start the search!" button, and I get the following:
Note that there are 8 matches, and a number of those posts have the subject "Grape and Raisin Poisoning." If I click on the link for the first post with the subject, I get the following:
Now, suppose I want to respond to that post directly from the archives. I can go up to the tool bar and click on the button to reply to that message, bringing me to this screen:
Note that I get a blank "new message" screen with the subject of the message I am replying to. If I scroll down that screen, I will see this:
Note that I haven't typed anything yet, but there is a button that says "Quote original message." So I click on that button and get this:
I now have the original message quoted, but there is more information here than I need to include in my reply, so I do a little editing of the quoted message (note that the sender's name and e-mail adddress have been blanked out. I didn't want to run the risk of someone picking up this person's name and e-mail address). This is the result of my edit:
Note that I have removed the extraneous information to save on bandwidth. I have left in only a portion of the original message to place my reply in context (in this case my reply is only to show a sample reply). I have removed the irrelevant information such as the message footer and the unnecessary portion of the original message. I can now scroll down the page and click the Send" button to send my message.
